Five Autumn Garden Ideas & Preparation

With the incoming colder temperatures of Autumn and the leaves beginning to signal the fall, now is a good time to look at some Autumn Garden Ideas and preparation. Autumn is a great period to introduce new elements or practices to your garden, or even plan a whole new landscape design for the following year.

Here are 5 ideas we always recommend at Outlook Gardens;

  1. Build a Firepit – If you haven’t got one already, now is the time to think about providing a source of heat in the garden, allowing continued enjoyment of the space as the colder nights draw in. It’s also worth considering LED lighting to highlight different spaces in the garden in the evening light.
  2.  Plan a New Garden Design – autumn is good time to take a step back and think about how your garden is working for you and to rethink your vision for it. Is there anything you’d like to add, such as a new planting or water feature to give it more character? Or maybe a centrepiece? Is there space for entertaining or for your children to enjoy nature?
  3. Frost Preparation– move your cold-sensitive perennial plants and ceramic or terracotta pots to covered dry areas where they won’t freeze. It’s worth looking up some autumn planter ideas for new ways to move things around.
  4. Plant vegetables, trees & perennials: Between now and the time we turn the clocks back in early November is one of the best times of year to plant vegetables, and many trees, and perennials. Cooler temperatures and soaking fall rains will help your vegetables and plants establish stronger root systems before their winter slumber.
  5. Plant some Autumn Flowers: Autumn into early winter is the peak time to plant spring-blooming bulbs, including tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, alliums, and crocuses. It’s important to put them in the ground now because they need a long winter of beauty sleep to get ready for their spring coming-out party.
